History

The decision to set up a Tamil Chambers of Commerce comes from an initiative of the MTTF to set up an economy and business commission under the MTTF. This follows resolutions on economic development taken in Seminar of the MTTF of 1993. The initiative was kicked off by the Youth Wing of the Mauritius Tamil Temples Federation in October 2001. Since then, a team of Young Professionals was constituted to put into action these resolutions. After research and analysis, it was decided to set up a full-fledged autonomous chamber commerce and industry.
Further developments led to the set up The Tamil Chambers of Commerce and Professionals, Mauritius. It was deemed necessary to bring together the business community and professionals together. All the other organizations in the community supported the initiative. There was a consensus that there was a need to regroup the main players in commerce and professionals.
The community needed an organization to take care of its business community and promote entrepreneurship. Additionally, it was clear that in order to promote socio-economic integration of the Tamil community in the nation-building process, members of the community needed to become economically independent. At the same time and forward looking, there is also the need to prepare the younger generations for opportunities in the new knowledge economy and in that sense needed to encourage the development of professionals in the younger generations of the community.
From thereon, the organization was set up to stand on its own feet. The main task of the founder members was to set up the basic infrastructure and structure for the organization. To that effect, an executive committee was formed and the latter started to work on an action plan and draft a constitution.
Once set up, the managing team adopted a field approach for a period of 2 years before membership could be opened for businessmen and professionals at large. Since then, several activities were organized namely surveys through interviews, workshops in kovils, business forums, sensitization and communication campaigns. The Strategic objective interalia for the first two years was to build up an economic status report for the Tamil Community. The status report was ready in March 2004 and presented at the residential seminar organized by the MTTF in May 2004. Consequently, a few new resolutions were made. The TCCPM has taken the lead to start the implementation by drawing up an action plan of the association which will constitute the guideline for the next 2 years.
